We returned in December last year to see in 2020 amidst the city’s colour, positivity and passion. Rioīrazil got under our skin when we first visited years ago-the beats, the movement, the energy. Like going back in time, the crystal clear turquoise waters and the long lazy days really allow us to reset and recharge our batteries.

It’s a mission to get to, but is truly a slice of paradise. We go back as often as we can, always staying at The Como Hotel in the centre of town and heading almost immediately to Koh Lipe, an unspoilt island in the Adang-Rawi Archipelago, near the Thai/Malaysian border.

We were forever jumping on buses, then ferries, to find hidden shooting spots. Our first shoot was just the two of us (Stephanie shooting, Valentina modelling) on the beaches of Koh Phangan. Then we’d swap the city’s hectic buzz for the magical serenity of beach life. We spent our weekends at the ever-vibrant Chatuchak market, scouring the stalls for vintage finds and inspirations, or headed to the late-night Train Market for amazing live bands, delicious food and more vintage stores. We immersed ourselves in Thai culture the colour, the energy, the warmth of the people, the steamy heat of the city. So in 2013, with dreams of a different lifestyle, we packed our bags and headed to Bangkok, leaving behind jobs, homes, friends, family and stability, in search of discovery. We met at university and had always talked of setting up a business together. The birth place of Rat & Boa, Thailand gave us the ultimate gift-freedom.
